Let's Hear It For The Boys
The history of male homosexuality is one of the most fiercely debated topics of the modern era. Although no one argues that it has always existed in one form or another, its historical prevalence is a constant subject of scholarly contention. Throughout most of written history, homosexual relations usually took the form of pederasty, that is, they were characterized by a marked age difference as well as a fixed assignment of sexual roles. This was particularly true in Ancient Greece where a great number of men formed bonds with young eromenos, meaning ‘loved ones’.
It is interesting to note that sexual activity with a person of the same sex does not necessarily demonstrate homosexual orientation. Some people frequently have intercourse with members of the same sex yet still see themselves as heterosexual. It is important therefore to distinguish between homosexual behavior, homosexual attraction and homosexual identity, which need not coincide.
Calculating a true census of the homosexual population is a monumental task. Due to the political nature of the topic, it is difficult to find studies where the meaning of the results has not been challenged. At one extreme, the Kinsey Report noted that 37% of men in the U.S. have achieved orgasm through contact with another male. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the National Opinion Research Center reported that approximately 0.7% of the men surveyed considered themselves to be exclusively homosexual. Most surveys, however, tend to place the number of homosexual men at around 8% of the general population.
Society’s attitude towards homosexuality has varied over the centuries from persecution to social acceptance. For many years homosexuality was deemed to be a psychiatric disorder; although the studies this theory was based on were later deemed to be flawed. It was not until 1986 that all references to homosexuality as a psychiatric disorder were removed from all modern psychiatric literature.
